Treating Psychogenic Erectile Dysfunction

Treatment for Psychogenic Erectile Dysfunction

Psychogenic erectile dysfunction (ED) is a form of erectile dysfunction that has a mental cause as opposed to a physical one. Researchers estimate that up to 20% of cases of erectile dysfunction are caused by mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or relationship issues.

Some of the most common treatments for psychogenic ED include:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, what most people think of when they hear the word "therapy", is a commonly recommended treatment for men with psychogenic ED. Therapy can assist men in identifying and addressing potential mental health issues or psychological issues that are contributing to their erectile dysfunction.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), a specific type of therapy, has been shown to be effective in treating psychogenic ED. By focusing on, identifying, and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, erectile function can improve significantly.

Medications

Medications such as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors like sildenafil (Viagra) are not typically effective in treating psychogenic ED. However, many doctors will prescribe medications while also recommending other methods such as psychotherapy to help alleviate symptoms and improve sexual function.

Lifestyle changes

Making lifestyle changes can make a remarkable impact on mental health. Positive changes in daily activities such as getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, and reducing stress can help to improve overall physical health. The impact of improving one's physical health is that one's mental health will improve as well. When a man's physical health improves, his sexual function improves as well.

Couples therapy

Couples therapy is another form of treatment for psychogenic ED. This can be especially helpful for men who have interpersonal relationship issues. Couples therapy can help to uncover any potentially unresolved relationship issues that may be preventing optimal performance in the bedroom.

Hypnosis

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to condition a person to adjust their mental state. Hypnosis can help a person to relax and instead focus on positive thoughts and feelings. Hypnotherapy is provided by an increasing number of clinical psychologists, counselors, and other therapists.

It is important to note that the treatment for psychogenic ED may take time and may require a combination of different treatments. It is also important for individuals with psychogenic ED to work with a healthcare provider to ensure that there are no underlying physical causes for their symptoms.
