About GHK-Cu
GHK-Cu is a naturally occuring copper peptide. It is a combination of 3 peptides, which is why it is also referred to as copper tripeptide-1. GHK-Cu was discovered in 1973 and since its discovery has been increasing popular as an ingredient in cosmetics. There is a small amount of GHK-Cu present in the human body at any given time. In response to injury, this peptide is released to signal a need for healing. It has been established that GHK-Cu has both protective and regenerative properties, including for the skin.
GHK-Cu has been clinically determined to:
- Improve the firmness of skin
- Improve skin elasticity and clarity
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines
- Improve the depth of wrinkles
- Improve structure of aged skin
- Smooth rough skin
- Improve complexion
- Reduce inflammation and damage from free radicals
GHK Improves Skin Regeneration
The ability of your skin to respond to damage and to repair itself decreases with age. The GHK content in our blood is highest when we are young and vibrant. As we get older, the levels of GHK in the bloodstream is lower, making it more difficult for the skin to repair itself to its youthful appearance.
GHK Increases Collagen
Collagen is the protein that helps to provide the structure of skin and other tissues in the human body. When collagen is degraded as we age, the skin is unable to maintain its structure and becomes wrinkled. The synthesis of collagen is well-known to be stimulated by the GHK-Cu copper peptide.
The most common cell in the human body that creates collagen is the fibroblast. Fibroblasts are considered to play an important role in skin rejuvenation. Fibroblasts produce growth factors and create the structural framework for skin to build. According to one research study, GHK (when combined with low-level laser therapy) increased fibroblast growth factor 230% and increased collagen production by 70%!
GHK is Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory
In studies on wound healing, GHK was found to decrease formation of free radicals. Free radicals are chemicals in the body that can cause damage to all kinds of cells. The free-radical theory of aging suggests that free radicals may actually be the underlying cause of aging in humans. Substances that neuralize free radicals are referred to as antioxidants. Hence, GHK is thought to have antioxidant properties, thereby contributing to its anti-aging effects.
GHK has also been found to decrease the release of iron from ferritin. Ferritin is used as a marker for inflammation. When ferritin releases iron, the iron produced causes a process called lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation produces huge amounts of free radicals. GHK is thought to inhibit this entire process.
